Susan grew up in Chicago and went to Columbia College Chicago majoring in journalism. Like her classmates, Susan dreamed of winning a Pulitzer but unlike the others Susan went the unconventional way toward that goal. She got a job with the tabloid Arcane as a reporter. One of her first stories was interviewing Harry Dresden when he first opened his own business. She was intrigued by his ad in the Yellow Pages.

After that, she kept track of his jobs and they entered a relationship that lasted a few years. On their first date, Susan came face to face with a demon for the first time. After the encounter and almost getting killed, Susan said, "This is the worst night of my life. But it's going to make a fantastic story." That was at the heart of Susan at that time in her life. Everything was fair in love and war in the pursuit of a story. She may have almost been killed but it would have been worth a story.

While investigating ghosts, Susan used Harry's invitation to Bianca's ascension in the Red Court vampires without his knowledge. It was a chance of a lifetime and she wasn't going to miss it. Unfortunately for her, it also almost killed her. She was taken by the vampires and turned. The Red Court vampires don't become full vampires until they've fed. Susan is a half-vampire technically still human. She has the strength, speed, sharp senses and she has the "kiss". Her saliva is narcotic.

Susan is a member of the Fellowship of St. Giles. It is an organization of half-vampires that try to help people and work against and expose the vampires. She has a magical tattoo that is a binding of her darkness. It isn't visible until her darkness is close to the surface and she is close to losing control. Susan has dedicated her life to being a Fellowship member and lives in Peru.

From Death Masks - That tattoo began on her cheek under one eye and wound down around her face, around the back of her neck, and over one collarbone, into the neckline of her gown. It wound along her left arm and left leg finishing at the back of her left hand and left foot.
